The most popular origin story claims it was created at the Manhattan Club in New York City for a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome (Winston Churchill's mother). While the veracity of this tale is debated, the Manhattan did indeed rise to prominence in late 19th-century New York. As one of the first cocktails to incorporate vermouth, the Manhattan pioneered an entirely new family of cocktails and directly influenced later classics such as the Martinez and the Martini. It is often called the "Queen of Cocktails," standing alongside the Old Fashioned (the "King") as one of the two foundational pillars of the cocktail world.

English Steps

  1. Add rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters to a mixing glass.
  2. Fill with plenty of ice.
  3. Stir gently and steadily with a bar spoon for 30–40 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted. Keep the bar spoon flush against the inside wall of the glass and stir with smooth, elegant motions.
  4. Strain through a julep strainer or Hawthorne strainer into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
  5. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry on a cocktail pick.
